ServSafe® Manager Class


Beginning June 27, 2016, SC DHEC began requiring every retail food establishment to have at least one food protection manager on staff.  This requirement can be met with successful completion of the ServSafe Manager course and exam.

The ServSafe Manager Course is an 8-hour class designed to help reduce the risk of foodborne illness by promoting sanitation in the food service industry.

Training covers these concepts:

  • The Importance of Food Safety
  • Good Personal Hygiene
  • Time and Temperature Control
  • Preventing Cross-Contamination
  • Cleaning and Sanitizing
  • Safe Food Preparation
  • Receiving and Storing Food
  • Methods of Thawing, Cooking, Cooling and Reheating Food
  • HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points)
  • Food Safety Regulations
  • And more . . .

The course consists of approximately 6 hours of interactive instruction, followed by a comprehensive, secure exam.  Each participant who achieves a score of 75% or higher is granted the title Certified ServSafe Food Protection Manager by the National Restaurant Association. This certification is valid for 5 years.


Who should take the ServSafe® Manager Course?

The ServSafe Manager Course is designed for employees who are at management level.  Due to the comprehensive nature of the material and the intensity of the exam, other staff members such food preparers, food servers and frontline staff should consider taking the ServSafe Food Handler Course.
